Botulin vs Memories
When I asked Mithun (my husband's cousin from India) what she thought of us, now that she was seeing us after 4 years---whether we looked old at 40, she was very respectful and looked the other way and dipped her head the slightest bit.
Of late, my husband (who has stopped looking closely at my face since 1992 (unless I have grown a 'nisa' or 'daadhi'!!) would tell me "Wookie, I think you should use some makeup, your face looks a little tanned". And sure enough I would look at my pictures and blame the camera man: why does he make my face look so dark?
Last night I was really exhausted. As is usual on the first working day after a long holiday. By 9.30 in the evening my eyes were burning with that peculiar sensation of sleep. I went to wash my face and saw a very tired looking person in the mirror. As I went to sleep I seriously started to think of the last time my face looked bright in a picture!! And I went back to about
3 years (?). The truth surprised me quite a bit! So there is no way out I thought. I have to get old like everyone else does??? It was hard to digest and the thought kept me awake for some time. But eventually sleep took over.
This morning Shimu (another cousin) called up from Simla just when I was getting out of the bath---having scrubbed under my eyes with extra soap and cleanser---just one last ditch to defy Time. He said "Juliedi, everytime I call you guys up, it is like a 'parikhya' --whether I am going to hear the answering machine for the 100th time or you guys will take my call". And then followed his usual witty humour and sweet raucous laughter. I called him Joy Mukherjee dancing in Kashmir with Sharmila Tagore and we went on laughing at all kinds of stupid things of the past! I swear if I had a mirror in my hand that very moment I would have seen the dark circles under my eyes vanish into thin air.
I guess I will now abandon my search for the ideal botulin and look for good memories and much more laughter to save my skin.
PS: I am wondering why the 'voice' (vocal chord), is the last part of the body to give away the age of a person--- when all other parts grow older much sooner??
